Overview
In The Black Panthers: A Story of Race, War, and Courage — The 761st Tank Battalion in World War II, historian Gina M. DiNicolo offers a comprehensive and candid history of this critical American fighting force. Drawing on extensive archival research, including previously untapped documents, and interviews with surviving soldiers and their families, DiNicolo vividly describes the 761st's training, deployment, and combat experiences. The book highlights key figures, including Sgt. Ruben Rivers, one of only seven African American men awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during World War II.

The professionalism, courage, and dedication demonstrated by the 761st and other non-white units ultimately helped pave the way for the integration of the U.S. military, a lasting achievement made possible by the efforts of these servicemen.
